Take me to the Mardi Gras

 真夏の暑い午後にこんな曲を聴いています。Bob James"Take me to the Mardi Gras"。

 転がるような音色のメインテーマをBob James御大が奏でています。少しワウペダルをかませたような音色はFender Rhodesには珍しいかなと思い、Wikipediaで調べてみるとクレジットには"Fender Rhodes"の記載はなく、"Electric Piano, Clavinet, Synthesizer (Arp Odyssey), Organ (Yamaha Yc30)"とありますが、どうなんでしょ?
 それよりも、調べていて少々驚いたのが、このテーマ、あちらこちらで聴いたことがあるなぁと思っていたら、サンプルされることの多いこと。

 この曲、本文中でも述べた通りかなりのサンプルネタになっていますが、そもそもの原曲はPaul Simonです。調べて判ったんですけれど(汗)。その原曲よりもコチラのほうが多くサンプル&カバーされているのは演奏・アレンジが優れていたからなんでしょう(HipHop的にという意味で)。手持ちのCDを聴き返してみますと、Run D.M.C.のようにリズムトラックだけ太くしてほぼそのまんま印象的なフレーズを使用していたり、やはり、印象的なイントロ部分の鐘のコンチキを使っているSlick Rick、それを崩しつつリズムパターンを拝借しているBeastieという感じでしょうか?ここで面白いサイトが合ったので紹介しておきます。

 これは聴き直してもお馴染みのフレーズが解りません。恐らくメインのリズムをかなり早く回しているというかテンポアップしているんじゃァないでしょうかね?
